Microsoft exam 70-293 is not what I had expected. In fact, it was much easier than I had feared. Although the exam does include network infrastructure planning and maintenance topics (as the title implies), it seems like a majority of the questions are about simply configuring Windows Server 2003. I guess I should have expected that[md]it is a Microsoft exam and it is about Windows Server 2003. What else would Microsoft have included? I don't mean to give the impression that the 70-293 exam is easy. It isn't. However, in my opinion, 70-293 is not as difficult as 70-293, 70-291, or 70-294.
The 70-293 exam tests your skills at deploying Windows Server 2003 in various networking environments and using Windows Server 2003 to establish a foundational network infrastructure. You'll need to have in-depth knowledge of Windows Server 2003 that casual interaction and book study will not provide. Do take the time and make the effort to thoroughly explore and interact with Windows Server 2003 before sitting for this exam.
The 70-293 exam, as with any other operating system product-specific exams, grants those who pass it Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) status. However, beyond that entry-level certification label, the 70-293 exam serves as a foundational or core exam for the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDBA) on Microsoft SQL Server 2000 certifications. Who Takes the Microsoft 70-293 Exam?
Per the Microsoft Preparation Guide for 70-293, Microsoft describes typical candidates as "IT professionals who work in the typically complex computing environment of medium to large companies. An MCSE candidate should have at least one year of experience implementing and administering a network operating system...".
Although Microsoft is specific about the background and experience of certification candidates, not everyone who is capable of acquiring the MCSE credential has hands-on network administrator experience in a corporate environment. As an alternative, I believe you can succeed on this exam if you have accumulated 6 months or more of hands-on experience in a lab environment. However, you need to have simulated a significantly complex Active Directory domain network with DNS, WINS, and DHCP.
About the Microsoft 70-293 Exam
Microsoft offers little or no information about the format, time required, and minimum passing score. At the time of this writing, there are no reports of adaptive testing in this exam, but this can change without notice.
I was presented with 40 multiple-choice (both single and multiple answers) and scenario-based multiple-choice questions. Some of them were formatted as drag-and-drop questions. A drag-and-drop question presents you with either a dialog box or a empty ordered or logical list along with a list of multiple drag and drop selections. The selections may be domain names, IP addresses, or action steps, among others. Your task is to drag and drop the appropriate selections to the correct area of the dialog box or into the correct position in an ordered list. This exam includes numerous exhibits of network design layouts and screen shots of dialog box configurations, a few of which are included in hot area and active screen questions.
